Bible study on faith and moving forward: Genesis 12:1-9

Opening Question: If God asked you to leave everything familiar behind today—your job, your neighborhood, and your security—what is the first fear that would come to your mind?

1. The Call to Leave (vv. 1-3)

God’s command to Abram was radical: "Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you." Faith is not a destination; it is a movement. For many in our immigrant congregations, the act of leaving is a physical reality, but the spiritual challenge remains: are we leaving our past behind to follow God, or are we carrying our old idols into our new land?

2. The Act of Obedience (vv. 4-6)

Abram did not wait for a detailed map. He moved because he trusted the Promiser more than the path. The text notes he was seventy-five years old—a time when many would seek comfort, not adventure. Abram’s obedience shows us that God’s call is not reserved for the young or the settled; it is for the willing.

3. The Altar of Worship (vv. 7-9)

Wherever Abram went, he built an altar. This is the core of his identity. He was not a settler seeking to build a kingdom for himself; he was a sojourner marking the land with his devotion. The Hebrew term for altar is 「place of sacrifice (מִזְבֵּחַ, mizbēaḥ, sacrifice)」. By building altars, Abram declared that his security was not in the land, but in the God who gave it.

Discussion Questions:

  • What "comforts" or "familiar structures" currently keep you from fully obeying God’s call in your life?
  • Why is it often harder to trust God when we are "settled" than when we are in crisis?
  • What does it look like to build an "altar" of worship in the midst of your daily, busy schedule?
  • Life Application: This week, identify one area of your life where you have been waiting for a "map" before you take a step of faith. Commit to taking one small, obedient action in that area, regardless of the uncertainty.
