How to preach the Parable of the Prodigal Son

Opening Question

When you read the story of the two brothers, do you find yourself identifying more with the one who ran away, or the one who stayed but felt resentful? Why?

Observations from Luke 15:11-32

1. The Distortion of Identity The younger son treats his father as a means to an end, asking for his inheritance while the father is still alive. In his mind, his identity is tied to his possessions rather than his relationship with his father. He represents the human tendency to seek freedom apart from God, only to find that such "freedom" is actually slavery to circumstances.

2. The Nature of Grace When the son returns, he expects to be a hired servant. He assumes grace must be earned. However, the father runs to him—a culturally undignified act for a patriarch—and restores his status immediately. The Greek word for the father's deep compassion is 「splagchnizomai (σπλαγχνίζομαι, splagchnizomai)」, meaning to be moved in one’s inward parts or bowels. It is a visceral, gut-level love that refuses to let the son remain a servant.

3. The Trap of Self-Righteousness The elder brother reveals a different kind of lostness. Despite his proximity to the father, his heart is far away. He serves out of duty, not love, and his anger at the celebration exposes his belief that he deserves better than the "sinner." He is the mirror image of the Pharisees, missing the father’s heart entirely because he is obsessed with his own "good" performance.
