What to do when you feel like you're losing your way

Life feels like a constant rush, and sometimes you lose sight of who you are. Discover how Jesus’ question to his disciples can anchor your identity today.

It’s 6:30 AM on a Tuesday. The coffee is brewing, but your mind is already racing. You’re thinking about the presentation at work, the mounting bills, and the quiet tension you felt at home last night. In the rush of North American life, it’s easy to feel like you’re just a collection of tasks and expectations. You’re balancing the cultural demands of success while trying to keep your faith from being squeezed into the margins of a busy calendar.

In Mark 8:27-38, Jesus walks with his disciples into the villages of Caesarea Philippi. It was a place crowded with temples to Roman gods and local idols. In the middle of that noise, Jesus asks a simple, piercing question: "Who do you say I am?"

Peter answers correctly, but then he immediately tries to tell Jesus how the mission should go. He wants a triumphant King, not a suffering Savior. Jesus corrects him sharply, then turns to the crowd—and to us—with a counter-intuitive truth: "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."

In our culture, "denying yourself" sounds like losing your identity. But Jesus is actually talking about finding your true self. He uses the word 「life (ψυχή, psychē)」. He’s saying that if you try to build your life around your own ego, your own anxiety, or your own need for control, you’ll eventually lose the very thing you're trying to protect. But if you let go of that grip and follow Him, you find a life that is deep, resilient, and real.

Your exhaustion? Your feeling of being pulled in two directions between your heritage and your current reality? Jesus sees it. He isn't asking you to perform; He is asking you to recognize who He is. When you anchor your identity in Him, your worth no longer depends on your productivity or your status.

The takeaway for today: You are not what you achieve; you are who you belong to. Let go of the need to manage your own life today, and simply walk in the direction He is leading.
