How to find peace when life feels out of control

When anxiety about the future keeps you up at night, learn how to practice Lectio Divina to ground your heart in God's unchanging wisdom and presence.

How to find peace when life feels out of control

In our fast-paced North American culture, we are often defined by our productivity. Between the pressures of work, the silent cultural divide often felt between generations in our immigrant churches, and the constant hum of anxiety, it is easy to feel like you are losing your grip. You might be exhausted, feeling that your faith is being pushed to the margins of your calendar.

God knows this exhaustion. He is not a distant observer of your stress; He is the anchor for your soul. Today, we will look at a time-tested practice called Lectio Divina (Divine Reading) using Proverbs 3:5-12 to move from frantic worry to quiet trust.

#### Step 1: Silence (Statio) Before you open the Bible, take one minute to simply breathe. Acknowledge that you are in God’s presence. You do not need to perform or impress Him. You are His child, and He is waiting for you.

#### Step 2: Reading (Lectio) Read Proverbs 3:5-12 slowly. Do not rush to analyze or study it. Simply listen for a word or phrase that catches your attention. Perhaps it is: "Trust in the Lord with all your heart."

#### Step 3: Meditation (Meditatio) Repeat that phrase in your mind. Let it sink below your intellect into your heart. In this passage, we find the Hebrew word yada (יָדַע, yādaʿ, yada), which means to know or to acknowledge. It is more than just head knowledge; it is an intimate, relational trust. When the text says to "acknowledge Him in all your ways," it is an invitation to bring your messy, anxious, and busy life into His light.

#### Step 4: Prayer (Oratio) Talk to God about what you read. If you are anxious, tell Him. If you feel lost, tell Him. Use the words of the scripture as your prayer: "Lord, I want to trust You with all my heart, but I am struggling. Help me acknowledge You in this decision I have to make today."

#### Step 5: Contemplation (Contemplatio) Sit in the quiet. You don’t need to say anything else. Just rest in the truth that He is leading your paths. You are not alone in your journey; He is walking every step with you.

We are not victims of our circumstances; we are children of the Most High. Use this time to trade your anxiety for His peace.
